Came across this article that has a lot of good information on things to learn and watch out for... since it's so very obvious once you pay attention.

There were times I was at seminars and such and sat there feeling slightly annoyed, watching the speaker using their hand signals. Didn't know as much what it was about then, but paid attention to how I felt about it... and it was annoying...

It's a pretty long document, but well worth reading...

Thanks so much for finding this, m'dear. I'll be reading it this weekend. Looks so far an excellent understanding of Ericksonian hyposis, which is really just about specific ways of directing one's attention and can be used in healthy ways, but can also be corrupted by forces of darkness.

A few thoughts on this. I think the article is correct in its analysis of hypnotic patterns that Obama uses. and that his speeches are appealing to subconscious feelings and not to our capacity for conscious, critical thinking. He does influence people that way. But i'm not sure I agree with the conclusion that this is "morally" wrong. Hypnotic conversational speech is actually the whole basis of advertising. Even I use it on my website, and i'm sure almost everyone does without realizing it. In some cases, it can be just a natural way of gaining rapport with people.

We don't say, "buy my product or use my service because it's good." First we say, I understand the problems you have, and I think my product or service can help. That way of presenting it gains a rapport with the person first, making a personal connection. That's pacing and leading, and can be a very natural way of relating and teaching. It doesn't necessarily undermine the person's ability to think critically. it actually could enhances their ability to think critically.

The problem with Obama is that he's not using pacing and leading in order to gain rapport so that he can engage peoples' critical thinking. A truly ethical person wouldn't want to win a campaign based on peoples' lack of critical thinking. I don't want to get clients by persuading them against their better judgment. I can help them learn from the wisdom of the subconscious mind, but always in conjunction with critical thinking, not by bypassing critical thinking.

I also think that saying hypnosis is morally wrong is like saying that advertising is wrong. Car ads use sexy images as anchors to pleasurable experience, and then automatically the car is a great car. We're used to this. We don't have to call it illegal or immoral, because we can take personal responsibility for how we interpret input. I don't listen to Obama's speeches at all, because my first impression the first time I did was, "Huh? What the hell is he actually saying? Anything?" The same as, "Huh? how the hell am I supposed to know that that car is good, from that ad?" But we're used to the ad, and we flip the channel and don't pay attention to it.

We have the choice to flip the channel, shut the TV off, not read the speeches, not watch them on youtube. We have the choice to listen with a discerning mind, if we want to, and it can actually be a learning experience. I watch TV for that kind of learning. It's quite fascinating. We can take the responsibility for what we allow into our minds.

We don't have to be helpless, passive victims of programming. People whose critical thinking is weak, or who have a very tenuous control of their conscious mind, will be more subject to being victimized this way. And of course the mass culture is doing its best to engineer people this way. But if we want to take back our freedom and the responsibility that goes along that, we don't have to be subject to it. Then the election is just a puppet show, and I've seen better puppet shows, and with much better costumes.

A good article on McCain, by one of my favorite columnists, is here:
